Europe is the second smallest continent, occupying about 7% of the Earth's surface. It is formed by an extensive peninsula of the Eurasian land-mass and is bounded on the north and north-east by the Arctic Ocean, on the north-west and west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and on the east by Asia beyond the Ural Mts.

The major rivers of Europe include the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Loire, and Tagus. Major mountain systems include the Alps, rising to 4807 m / 15 771 ft at Mont Blanc, and the Pyrenees, rising to 3404 m / 11 168 ft at Pico de Aneto.

Europe is densly populated, supporting over 25% of the world's population. Culturally diveser, Europe contains 47 nations and it's citizens speak 50 languages.

About 70% of the population live in cities and towns, working in factories or service industries, such as finance and tourism. It produces more manufactured goods than any other continent. These include cars, ships, steel, and electronic goods. Farming is also important, with farms covering about half the land. Crops include barley, potatoes, oats, and wheat. In the southern sections, citrus fruit, olives, and grapes for wine are also grown.
